Tips to Safeguard from Fraudulent Activities

In the past decade, financial fraud, particularly Credit Card fraud has begun to skyrocket. People at times end up falling prey to fraudulent modus oprandi and divulge personal/ crucial information, which in turn grants the fraudsters a window to your personal information leading to financial misgivings. While the information age has equipped us with many tools to combat these, we must empower ourselves by remaining vigilant and informed at all times in order to protect ourselves.

1. RBL Bank Never Asks for Personal Details!

If ever you receive a call, text, or email from RBL Bank asking for your personal details like 16 digit credit card number, expiry date, CVV, PAN number, OTP, MPIN etc., do not disclose them. We will never ask for private information, and you may be handing it over to a fraudster.

2. Don’t Trust Unknown Callers!

Unverified calls asking you for your card, or personal details are to be completely ignored. Always make sure to verify wherever you’re being asked potentially confidential information. These calls are normally paired with some kind of incentive such as; “we’ll increase your credit limit” or “we require your details to enter into a lucky draw”, these are to coerce you into forgoing details, which will lead to a fraud.

3. Double Check OTP Messages!

Always verify the purpose of the OTP & Never share OTP or Card details with anyone over calls, SMS or email. A transactional OTP SMS from RBL Bank will always carry the transaction value and merchant name. You must double check every time before you make a purchase online.

4. Avoid Suspicious Offers!

If an offer sounds too good to be true, chances are, it is. Ignore such offers which sound unrealistic, since they have the potential to scam you. For example, offers such as “you’ve won a free car” or “click on this link and get free gift vouchers” will request for details of account, however, these are merely means for scammers to access your details, and are to be ignored. Offers from trusted sources should be verified as well, before forgoing any details. Never open suspicious links and attachments.

5. Steer Clear of Unverified Apps!

Unverified apps on the app store can extract data from your mobile device itself! While downloading an app, ensure it is from a trusted source, and do prior research before exposing your device! A very common scam is fraudulent communications asking you to “Download this app for KYC”, or “Open this link to continue”, however, one must see through these and only trust verified sources.

6. Don’t Get Spoofed!

Fake calls and emails are an increasing occurrence today, and fraudsters prey on those who fail to verify the authenticity of these conversations. Ensure that your contacts are genuine, and not impostors. Here are a few points to keep in mind:

  • Always refer RBL Bank official website (www.rblbank.com) for details of Customer Care Centre
  • Always check the email address of the sender, sometimes small errors are there which are nearly invisible to the eye, such as ‘Bnak’ instead of ‘Bank’, which you won’t register unless explicitly looking for it. Furthermore, if in doubt, contact the bank directly, and we’ll clarify any doubts you may have.
  • Always check if link contains “https://online.rblbank.com” when you enter/access your account details online
  • Never reply to any SMS/Email/Social Media messages which seek your personal information

7. Avoid Clicking on Unknown Attachments!

Opening attachments in email or text messages from illegitimate source can unveil your details. Check the following:

  • Do I generally receive attachment from this source?
  • Is this a legitimate source?

Think carefully. And refrain from opening attachments from sketchy or untrustworthy sources.

8. Never Disclose Personal or Financial Information!

You are the last line of defense against financial fraud. Despite all the layers of security your Credit Card comes with, staying inattentive can get you in trouble. Be cautious with your information always, and don't become a target.

9. Stay alert from fraudulent activities on your account!

  • Keep an eye on your financial activity
  • Review your statement, to spot any anomalies
  • Reach out to the bank immediately if you find anything suspicious and block your Card
